Vial decrimper tool for safely removing crimped aluminum seals from pharmaceutical vials

Vial Decrimpers

Vial decrimpers remove aluminum seals from sealed vials without damaging the glass rim or contaminating the stopper — essential tooling for QC sampling, rejection, re-stoppering, and recovery workflows. This page covers 13mm and 20mm decrimper selection, correct technique, and when a decrimper belongs in every crimping station.

Why You Need a Decrimper

Any lab that crimps vials will eventually need to open one. Common reasons:

  • QC sampling — pulling a vial from a batch for assay, CCI, or visual inspection.
  • Rejection recovery — a misapplied crimp on an otherwise good lot.
  • Re-stoppering — recovering expensive formulations after a stopper defect is detected.
  • Process validation — destructive testing of sample vials during tooling qualification.
  • Mislabel correction — rare but unavoidable.

Without a decrimper, operators resort to pliers, snips, or box cutters — all of which risk glass fracture, stopper contamination, and operator injury. A proper decrimper is cheap insurance.

13mm vs 20mm Decrimpers

Decrimpers are size-specific just like crimpers. Match the decrimper to your seal format:

  • 13mm decrimper — for 2 mL, 3 mL, 5 mL vial closures.
  • 20mm decrimper — for 10 mL, 20 mL, 30 mL, 50 mL vial closures.

If you run both formats, buy a kit that includes matched crimper and decrimper tooling for each size.

How a Decrimper Works

A vial decrimper grips the aluminum seal skirt and pries it open along the rolled vial lip without contacting the glass itself. The jaw geometry is inverse to a crimper — instead of closing the skirt, it lifts it. Done correctly, the seal peels away intact and the stopper remains seated in the vial.

Correct Decrimping Technique

  1. Stabilize the vial upright on a rack or gripper.
  2. Position the decrimper jaws around the seal skirt, below the crimped lip.
  3. Apply steady pressure — one smooth stroke, no twist.
  4. Lift the loosened seal straight up with forceps.
  5. If the stopper is to be reused, inspect the top surface before resealing.

Never rotate the decrimper on the vial — twisting concentrates force on the glass and causes fracture.

Choosing the Right Decrimper

  • Hardened, size-matched jaws for the target seal format.
  • Non-marring contact surface that protects glass and stopper integrity.
  • Ergonomic handle — especially important for batches of 20+ recoveries.
  • Cleanroom materials — stainless or hardened steel, smooth finish.
  • Matched brand when possible, so crimper/decrimper clearances align.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the decrimper on a fresh, unused seal?

No. The decrimper is for sealed vials only. Applying one to an uncrimped seal can damage the skirt geometry.

Can the stopper be reused after decrimping?

Only if your process permits. For validated workflows, treat the stopper as single-use unless your procedure explicitly allows re-stoppering with documented CCI.

Do decrimpers wear out?

Yes. Inspect jaws periodically — if the seal is tearing or requires excessive force, the tool has lost its edge.

Every crimping station should include matched decrimpers. Contact us for product matching or request a quote.
